I know you can turn your ipad into a monitor through wifi but can you make a direct tether using the charging cable? Also would it be god for lightweight / on the go gaming?

No. You'd have to use a comms cable to get the display to show from another device. Ipads only have usb. So you couldn't use it as a monitor.
