Used norton many years before getting windows 8.1 five months ago (I hate most of 8.1's nonsense).
Never had a virus for like 10 years. With norton, when I google something, it showed either a green, red, or gray flag next to the sites to know if it's safe to click on. I don't think defender has something like this. Though I noticed for the first time the other day one result had 'This site may be hacked' under it but was in regular blue text that didn't stand out and I probably never noticed if other sites had that. I don't think I've had a virus with W8.1 but I like knowing what's safe or not to click on when googling. Do you think it's worth getting norton? I like not worrying about another program and making sure defender's disabled etc and might loose performance with norton. Also with a google image search, norton doesn't even show the flags to know if an image is safe or not but defender doesn't either.

And today coincidentally, I was looking for a banana but bread recipe and clicked on the 2nd google result, allrecipes.com which I highly doubt has viruses. MS security essentials popped up saying there were like 4 threats detected and to scan to remove them now as if they weren't even blocked and were at infected stage. I didn't click 'scan now' since I never saw that screen and didn't trust it, so I alt+ctrl+deleted out of there and updated spybot and defender and ran full scans like I do every day but nothing was found and nothing was in defender's 'quarantined' or 'detected'. Then I tried malwarebytes for the first time and it found nothing. But when I tried to log into email and an ecommerce site, for the first time, it was redirecting me to ads or was just bringing me back to the log in strangely but this went away eventually. ?

After this, I got some popups that I need to update flash and was at a security risk but I tried updating flash the other day because youtube is freezing but flash is embedded in W8.1 and it said I had the latest version and I saw no easy way to uninstall it and reinstall, so instead of messing anything up, I bought a $120 new GPU to hopefully fix the freezing since I wanted to upgrade from my $30 GPU anyway.

Lastly, I was in my external drive the other day and it was telling me permission denied need administrative privileges or something to change anything like a word doc or anything strangely but I have an OEM W8.1 and am the only user with all administrative privileges enabled to me etc.

Please help thanks.

Soulds like you may have a virus or something that is messing with your Norton Antivirus, I recommend going out and installing some free tools to search you PC for viruses:

MalwareBytes(Free): http://www.malwarebytes.org/mwb-download/

Avast! Antivirus Free: http://www.avast.com/en-us/download-thank-you.php?product=FA-ONLINE&locale=en-us

Download these, install them, update definitions, then scan for viruses and malware. Tell me how it goes, and really with free options like this I would never pay for antivirus again, not to mention how much resources software like Norton and McAfee waste

sorry i mashed three completely different questions into one thread making it possibly confusing. I don't have norton anymore since getting W8.1, I was asking if it's worth it just for the google red/green/gray flags etc. I fully scanned with malwarebytes (first time ever using) and was clean as well as defender and spybot I scan about every night clean.

Being that the incident was from allrecipes.com of all sites, I'm not so scarred, but it's so strange that MS security essentials popped up saying to scan to clean but the scan was clean and there wasn't anything in detected/quarantine.

You may not have an issue after all, it may have been a sort of false alarm which is fairly commonplace with all antivirus software. But feel free to use MalwareBytes and Avast! in the future as both are free and are great products, I personally have never had a virus, now my sister on the other hand... But if you have any further questions feel free to ask. Also sorry for the misunderstanding of your question
