32GB SSD Windows 8 install advice

I built this pc in 2007. It's slow. A friend just gave me a 32GB Intel SSD for free. I'd like to use it to speed up my computer.

My first thought was to use SSD caching (Intel Smart Response Technology) However, I don't think this option won't work for me because it's only for Intel chipsets, an my mobo has the nForce 680i SLI chipset. (Intel under the hood, I think but still not compatible...)

My second thought was to install Windows on it, but my current C:\ drive (which does not include my data) is 49 GB. So I looked into options for moving some of the folders to a different drive. Turns out ProgramData can be moved, as well as Users (using unattended install). But "Program Files" can't be moved (read: unsupported). So if I put Windows 8 on the SSD, I'm worried about running out of space on the SSD down the road.

Long story short, I'm not sure the best way to use this SSD.

Advice?

Gee - getting Windows on a 32GB ssd will be hard. By the time its formatted you'll have 25 or so GB left. Windows will take nearly all of that. It doesn't leave much left for more data writes.

I wouldn't use it for Windows - too skinny. But maybe for other stuff you load a lot say favorite games, etc.

Hi,

The NForce 680i platform does not support AHCI, so many of the advanced features found on SSDs will not be supported on that platform if it even works at all. I can't confirm for certain but I believe that TRIM will not work on that platform either, which will result in decreased performance of the SSD over time and a significantly shorter lifespan.

If you can find a cheap Intel P41 based motherboard you will be in much better shape. The Intel 4 series motherboards blow the NForce series motherboards away in every way.

My old PC uses an Asus P5Q Pro Turbo, works wonderfully with SSDs
