Can a single Xeon E5-1600 run in a dual socket board?

I'm wanting to eventually buy 2 x e5-2600 CPU's and wanting to buy the motherboard and case for the dual socket processors but wanting to know if a single E5-1600 processor will run in the dual socket board?
It's my first post, I'm very grateful for this website and the users knowledge that has taught me a lot. Thank you.

Thank you for your help. My question was more about the e5-1600 series as from what I can gather they are only designed to work as a single processor. So on all the motherboard manufacture websites they only show capability with single socket 2011 boards. So I really have 2 questions, why can't you set up a dual e5-1600 pc? And if they only work as a single processor will they work on a dual board? I'm guessing one will work on a dual board but just want to confirm. Thank you
