Bigger 1080p monitors have less pixel density than smaller monitors. You use a bigger monitor if you need to sit further away from it.

Provide links to both. Play spot the difference and tell us if there are any other differences.

http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_i... The Asus PB278Q is a 27 inch 1440p monitor.
http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_i... The Dell U2412M is a 24 inch 1080p IPS monitor.

You need a good graphics card to drive the 1440p monitor.
I don't know why people like IPS monitors so much. Their redeeming feature seems to be that you can view them side-on better.

If you've got a good graphics card - GTX770/R9 280X or better then the Asus 1440p would be a good choice.

If not, just get a normal 1080p monitor eg Asus ve248H
