It'll work, but it may or may not run at full speed. You should really use cat5e for gigabyte ethernet. If the cable isn't up to it the card will run at 100 mps. Whether this matters or not depends upon the rest of your network. If the PC is connected to a router or switch that doesn't have gigabyte capabilities then it doesn't matter.

1gb lan works with cat5e cable. standard cat5 should too but i've seen cables that just didn't work. depends on the cable quality.

to be sure you should use cat5e or cat6 or higher

CAT5 should work for most short runs, but 5e and 6 most definitely should work except in in the worst environments.
