i tried the os of UBUNTU for a while from a usb memory stick and it was fine. I have just completed the installation alongside Windows xp .At the end of the installation process the message was to restart the computer.I did this but now Ii have a blank, black screen with a message to change to 1024x768a 60 hz. I think I know what this means but have no idea how as I am unable to access properties or anything else via the computer. Can anyone help?
Thanks.

You need to edit the grub.cfg file located in /boot/grub/grub.cfg

this happens because you changed the boot loader to grub 2 while installing Ubuntu..
Go here http://

sorry forgot to mention:1st you need to boot with repair disk and restore you boot-loader
insert disc
boot from it
click fix start up
If it does not work click command prompt and type in bootmgr /fixmbr
