Upgrade processor speed?

can i upgrade amd athlon(tm) 64 x2 dual core processor 5000+ to quad core? Running windows 7 with a gtx 285 ocx graphic card. I would really hate to buy a whole new computer but I would really like to upgrade it to a faster processor if possible. Any feed back would be greatly appreciated

What is your motherboard? The answer will most likely be that you could upgrade to another Athlon x2 thats faster but not a quad core.

Lucky that its a M2N-SLI. Here is a list of all supported CPU's with that motherboard:

Which includes Phenom 2 X4's (up to Phenom 2 945), and Athlon 2 X4's (up to Athlon 2 X4 640), so you can put a quad core CPU in there. Make sure you update the BIOS before you install a new CPU though.

I do have one concern... while I dont know a lot about computers mine is a am2 socket not a am2 socket+. That shouldnt matter if I try to upgrade to a quad processor?

The site lists it as compatible, what will happen is that the hyper transport speed will be reduced to be compatible with the older motherboard, but it will still be a big performance increase
