Problems with my graphics in games

I've had this GPU (GTX 660 ti) for about a year and a half now. I haven't had any problems with it until recently (maybe like a week). Whenever I play games like Starcraft 2, Age of Wonders 3, and right now Archeage, there are very visible problems happening. It's kind of hard to explain, but I'll do my best.

I looked for images of screen tearing, because that's what I thought it was at first, but none of the images that I was finding looked like my issue. Really the best way I can explain it is that there are lines/boxes of messed up graphics that go to the center of my screen and taper off into a point. If you could imagine this painting but in a game, It's what it looks like as far as that they all go to the center of my screen, but not to a specific point like in that link. Those lines/boxes don't stay in a single spot either, they go all over the place and flicker. I should also mention that not all of (whatever you would call this problem) it goes to the center of my screen; it really goes all over, but the majority does go to the center of my screen.

It seems to be messing up on effects, for instance, I was fighting a boss on Starcraft 2 and he was spitting out these pools of acid on the ground. I wasn't having much of a problem until those starting getting thrown out and my graphics were really messing up. There was another instance of my issue on another game, Age of Wonders 3, and it was a pretty similar situation. An AI cast some spell on a city and it was something that stayed on that city until I dispelled it. I still experienced my issue whenever I wasn't looking at my city but when I would my issue would get worse.

Again, I wish I could get some picture to show you guys, but it's really hard to take a screen shot because it's flickers all over the place and doesn't stay in a single spot.

When I say that overclocking too high creates artifacts, I'm not talking about factory overclocking. I'm talking about when you go in there and set the clock speed so high that the card is no longer stable. If it's just artifact because of age, it's because of something not happening correctly in the circuitry. The "overclock" on factory overclocked cards isn't really an overclock. It's just the clock speed of the card, which happens to be higher than the reference sample that Nvidia sends out as samples. But it gets tested for stability, and then thousands of the same card get the same clock settings because it was considered to be mild enough for anyone to use under any load.

As for your other card, try that. It's actually...

Here are some screen shots that I took in Starcraft 2. The ones that i took only captured a small bit of what was actually happening. Imagine these little "tear" things, I'll call them, but multiply them by like 20+ a second. It isn't constantly happening, and I haven't been able to completely pin point when it happens, but I managed to capture what it looks like.

Here is the link to the imgur album.

Not 100% certain, but I think that those are artifacts. They are strange looking, but they generally happen when the card can't maintain full stability under the load its getting. Overclocking too high can cause that, but older cards get that after normal use over time. Capacitors degrade, connections get funky, memory faults, yada yada - parts die.

There are ways to check this using GPU stress test software, but there is no guaranty that the same thing will happen in other programs.

The fastest and most reliable way to check is to just try the game with another video card if you have access to one. See if you can pull one out of another computer for a test run. Maybe a friend will let you, or maybe you have an old one.

If you get the same issue with another card, then it's something else in your computer; otherwise, it's just your card showing age. The only exception to that would be if it's a driver issue. Before getting into that, do you have access to another video card?

I do, but it's not nearly as close to what I have. It's like a Radeon 5550 HD series. So in other words, it's really old and not too great to begin with. And also, if I were to put that card in, will I have to get rid of my current GPU drivers? I should also ask how do I overclock it, or underclock if that is even a thing :). I think mine came overclocked and I haven't messed with it. So I could lower it and see if that does anything.

As for your other card, try that. It's actually good that it's less powerful than your new card. That will allow more load under the same graphics settings for your game. Here's what to do.

Use driver sweeper (direct download link). Let it take you into safe mode via restart. Select Nvidia for driver removal from the drop down menu. Check the option to "Remove C:\Nvidia" folders, and then click the big button that says "Uninstall the current and previous drivers and shutdown the computer without rescan." After it's done, your computer will turn off. Once it does, swap out the video card, boot up, and install the drivers for your Radeon 5550.

Restart and then launch your game at the same settings. Yes, it will run like crap. That's fine. Do your best to play for as long as it would take for the artifacts to appear with your 660 ti (30 minutes?). See what happens.
