My PC runs win7 and winXP as dual boot from two separate drives, win7 is my primary OS.
WinXP drivers do not exist for my soundcard, so when using WinXP, I have to switch to the motherboards integrated sound processor, obviously this is a problem, and any new hardware additions are likely to face the same problem.
My solution is to run winXP in VMware Workstation 10 on my win7 OS.
This is strictly for running older games that have compatibility issues with Win7.
So far games seem to run without difficulty in VMware XP, since requirements were often for single or dual core systems with less than 4GB of ram, sound and graphics don't seem to be an issue either.

My problem revolves around steam, I have a lot of older games on steam that are incompatible with win7 and wish to run them on XP.
Steam runs fine on the real winXP installation, however in the virtual winXP installation it seems to install fine, but will not login to my steam account.
It returns the error

"Login to Steam failed.
Either the specified account does not exist, or the password was wrong.
Please check your account name and password and try again."

This I have done.
Also, the account name and password have been re-entered in to both real installations and work fine.
I am curious is there something I have missed or a network problem running VMware? Though browsing the web and running videos present no problems.

Any suggestions are much appreciated.

On windows 7 right click the game>properties>compatibility, tick the box saying "run this program in compatibility mode for" and select windows XP service pack 2.

This should allow the older games to work fine on win7 without all that dual boot hassle.

It should in a perfect world. Remarkably however this was the first thing I tried, and it failed. Thus necessitating more complex solutions, the Virtual Machine thus far proving the most successful. If you have any helpful comments, please contribute.
