Wierd lag when playing Battlefield 4

Hi Guys,

I have a problem that I just can't figure out so I thought I'd try and get some expert advice. Recently I've been getting a lot of lag when playing Battlefield 4. I'll get these moments when whatever key I am pressing (most of the time it's W, so running forward, but it happens with other keys too) the game will keep acting as if I am still pressing the key when I release the key and I won't be able to do anything else, such as fire or move in another direction. This will continue for a few seconds and then everything will go back to normal for a few minutes, when then it will happen again.

I've tried updating my drivers, going back to old drivers, resetting my BIOS, playing with an overclock and no overclock on my GPUs, moving my memory sticks to other slots etc but nothing so far nothing has solved it. I don't know if it's the game because I don't really play too many other games, but when I do it hasn't happened.

My GPUs are getting upto 70 degrees C when in normal fan mode, and at roughly 60 degrees C with 100% fan speed. My CPU is pretty stable at temps around the mid 40 degrees.

This happened when I had 1 GPU and is still happening with 3 installed.

I have a feeling it's to do with the GPUs and that's why I posted in this section of the forum but I might be completely wrong, so I apologise if I've posted this message in the incorrect area.

Any suggestions are much appreciated.

Spec:
CPU: AMD FX8350 (overclocked to 4.5ghz)
GPU: Tri-fire Radeon HD7950 (1 x HIS 7950 and 2 x XFX 7950, all three are reference cards)
RAM: 2x4GB Crucial Ballistix Sport 1600mhz
PSU: 1000w Fractual Design Tesla R2
MOBO: Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2
CASE: Silverstone Raven RV03
CPU Cooler: Enermax TB cooler
SSD: Crucial M4 256GB SSD
HDD: Can't remember the spec, an old 2.5inch 300GB (BF4, along with all other programs are installed on the SSD, the HDD is just for pics, films, music etc).
Keyboard: TTeSport MEKA
Mouse: Logitech G700
Plus 3 extra coolermaster 120mm case fans.

Hey,

what are you describing doesn't sound like a problem with your hardware. To me it sounds much more like the so called rubber-banding effect you get due to network lag.

I had loads of problems with BF3 and even stopped playing it. The problem could have been either the server lagging or my ISP (Internet Service Provider). In my case it was my ISP at the time due to high utilization of the network at peak hours. The problem wasn't at my end and so there wasn't anything else I could do but either change ISP or wait for them to upgrade their network in my area. So I waited ...

It works flawlessly now. Both BF3 and BF4.

What I would suggest is visit your ISP forums and see if there are more people complaining of latency issues in...

Thanks for your reply.
Resolution scale is at 100%, I have tried Ultra and High, and it makes no difference. I didn't think to try medium and low as I thought it would make no difference if I'm still get the problem at high. And I have tried a normal MS keyboard and again I still have the problem.

Does this happen in campaign?

No idea. I haven't played Campaign, but I'll give it a quick go and let you know what happens.

Also I just remembered that this also happened on BF3 for a short period, but never to this extent, and for some reason it sorted itself out, or I did something unknowingly that fixed it.

Thanks for the reply. I don't know if it's rubberbanding because it seems like that will cause jerkiness when playing, which is not what I get. It could be down to my connection, but I don't get very high pings. I do play in a lot of German servers and I'm based in the UK so it could be down to the distance so I'll see what happens when I play in UK based servers. But still my pings are never higher then 70.

Also my ISP is supposed to prioritize bandwidth for online games through their network, so I'm still not sure if it's my ISP. But I'll do more research into them and see what I can find out.

Although this would be a normal thing to recommend sometimes things are not that simple.

During the period I was having issues the problem was that you would see the server as a sub 50 ms server, when I enter the game and check my ping it's as low as 15-20 ms but the next moment you would rubber-band and can't do anything.

When I spoke to my ISP they admitted they had major issue with utilization especially during peak hours and had plans to a major network upgrade. It took a few months but I got my speeds increased for free and all my latency issues in games are gone.

The OP should check his ISP forums.

Hey,

I'm in the UK and play on a lot of German servers too. This should not be a problem.

The network issue won't call jerkiness - or at least it didn't to me back then. It was kinda making me time-warp if you can imagine what I mean. You keep going in one direction or shoot at someone but nothing seem to happen, the next thing you know you are dead for example, or you just go back to normal.

But again, I don't insist that this is what happens to you, I just think it's rather network related than anything else as you said that in single player you have no problems at all.

You can try running a Trace Route to some server and see what it shows.

Here are the instructions how:

Running a Trace Route

Windows
Click Start and type CMD in the search field.
Right-click on CMD.exe and select Run as Administrator.
Type tracert xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx > c:\tracert.txt and press Enter. Replace the x's with the appropriate server address.
Allow several minutes for the trace route to complete.
A file will be created inside your C: drive called tracert.txt that contains your trace route information.
Type exit and press Enter to close the command window.

Then I guess you can paste the info in here but I have really poor network knowledge. Hopefully someone would be able to shed some light after seeing your Trace Route.

Do you mind me asking who your ISP is? Mine is EE. Yes they are cheap but they seem to be half decent, at least for my exchange. Before I was basically with TalkTalk (yes I know) and although I didn't have an issue with it, my ping, upload and download speeds were quite a bit slower then what I'm getting now.

I'll do what you asked for tomorrow, it's time for me to go to sleep if I'm going to wake up to go to work tomorrow.

Thanks guys for the help.

Hewllo again,

no problem - my ISP is Virgin Media which has horrible reviews and feedback from users but I am forced to use it as it's one of the few one that do not require me to have a BT land line; and the second reason I chose them - they are cheap.

Virgin media is the best internet going? lol I get 150mb/s download, 20mb/s up. and they are not that cheap. although I pay for a premium deal.
