I got this Gigabyte R9 290 last week

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

I thought it was a good choice with the custom Windforce cooler. I didn't find any reviews of it specifically, but I found reviews of the OC version and the 290x version and it seems pretty good.

Here is my experience so far monitored with MSI AB:

Idle: 39-45 degrees C
Minor load (youtube video) 55-62 degrees C
Benchmark Test: 75-88 degrees

These are far higher than what was reported in the reviews

When I turn the fan up and open the case, it barely budges.

I called up Gigabyte, got some Taiwanese woman (nice but hard to understand and wouldn't let me speak a word) she said these temps are normal, but I still think they are unacceptably high for a card with custom cooler.

Actually, they are fine temps. If you want the GPU to remain cooler, you will have to go to a custom cooler. Does your 290 have a BIOS switch like my 290X?

What was the benchmark that took it ti 88C? How's your air flow/case cooling?

When applying the cooler have you used thermal paste/compound before adding the heatsink/fan? Its VERY important to use it.

The R9 290 can handle up to 95C without getting affected, so don't bother yourself unless it goes above that.

Thanks for the response, I'll have to check on the BIOS switch. Gigabyte is too cheap to include an instruction manual and one online is just generic Radeon card manual.

I'm upgrading from a Sapphire 7950 and that thing RAN COOL, always below 35 C. So these temps are a bit shocking.

Furmark was the one that got me to 88C. I know this card is rated up to 95C but I figured I'd hit some thermal throttling before that point and I figured I wouldn't need a custom cooler since this one already has a non-reference cooler.

Thanks, but I didn't add a custom cooler. It came with the Windforce cooler installed, which I figure would do a descent job but it hardly keeps it cooler than the reference 290.

If you want something to compare it with, the 290X in my sig below idles at 36C. I just ran the Furmark default 1080p benchmark and got it to 75C. My BIOS switch is in the low noise/higher temp position, and the card is in a standard Fractal Design Midi R2 case with the 3 factory fans at med speed. So, it does seem as though your 290 is running a tiny bit warmer than you may expect. How's your case's air flow?

Btw, my BIOS switch is on the top of the card about an 1 1/2" back from the bracket: http://www.asus.com/websites/global/products/S6zmQKxx2e...
It's very tiny and hard to spot.

Might it be that the GPU fan is not running at maximum speed? Try using HWMonitor or SpeedFan to know the percentage of speed of your GPU fan, and if it was below %100, then you can use SpeedFan itself or MSI Afterburner to increase its speed to %100.

HWMonitor won't show the gfx card fan speed on mine. Nor does Furmark. (0%) So, I don't know how fast it is spinning, but I don't notice any change in sound. Dead quiet.

I just re-ran Furmark a 2nd time and got 76C this time. It was idling at 40C this time. Still no sound from the card.

I don't think the case has much to do with this because I get basically the same temps if I remove both sides and leave it open. I can't even find my BIOS switch because GB is too lazy to provide an instruction manual. I think it must have something to do with the heatsink, I've read GB has had issues with it. I cant return it (NEWEGG!) but I might exchange it
