I'm an Idiot.

Hey guys, I've been here a few times before to ask about my parts list and I made a pretty big goof up... I didn't bother checking actual dimensions before ordering my motherboard, all I looked at was it's size (ATX) and if my case could support that size (Yes it can). But I opened my case up today and my motherboard isn't going to fit inside... I feel like such a retard. All I have left to buy is the RAM and I'll have all the pieces I need to finally start my build.

So with that bit of embarassment out of the way, what's my best course of action? Should I simply try to sell off my Gigabyte ATX motherboard and buy a mini(or micro whichever is one step below ATX) motherboard, or should I purchase a new case that can fit my motherboard? I do like this motherboard, it's nice, well built and has all the features I need. I'm willing to go either way, depending on which is the most optimal route to go down. I don't want to downsize my motherboard if it means skimping on future proofing myself, but I also would like to keep and use my gorgeous Cooler Master HAF X.

Help! (Yes, I am an idiot! :) )

Here's my parts list.

I bought it back in January... I got it from Amazon, I'm not even sure I can still return it but I'll take a look at my Amazon receipts to see if it's possible.

Any recommendations for a case that WILL fit my chosen components?

Thanks!

Edit: If possible, a recommendation on a course of action to take before 2 am pacific tonight would be optimal, as I get paid around that time and will order the part that I need right away. I'm so close, all my parts are just sitting in my room staring at me begging me to put it all together!

Nope, I took off the side panel and put my mobo in there, then tried to put the side panel back on, and the mobo sticks out about an 1/2-1 inch out of the side of the case.

Yes, I am very stupid for not looking at the actual dimensions before purchasing.

LOL, ok guys, it's 100% confirmed that I am a complete idiot. I thought the mobo went on flat, not on the side of the case.

Hehe, I r smrt.

Sorry for the idiocy guys, and thanks for all the replies!

Glad we stopped you. The idiocy was just about to get compounded big time:) In all seriousness I'm glad your project may now proceed. Even us old hands sometimes get a little nervous when we build that new PC every four years or so, so don't feel bad. Post some pics of the final build.

Good to know that it worked out. Now please do your homework and see videos like the one I just linked in order to do a proper building so you can have a good experience with your brand new computer.

Thanks, notherdude! :)

Yeah, this is going to be my first ever build, but it's something I've wanted to do my entire life and I've been researching how to do this for years now. Simple rookie mistake. That youtube video showed me how stupid I am, haha.

I will be very careful and watch that entire youtube video, and read multiple articles on how to put together a PC before I touch my 1700$ worth of components. It's taken my 3 months to buy all this, I'm gonna lose my sh*t if I screw something up :p

Well, since the original question has been answered and I have successfully made an idiot of myself, anyone care to give this rookie some first time pointers for putting together a PC? Just stuff like the little tricks you've learned over the years to streamline the build, cable management tips, etc stuff like that. :)

Thanks again guys!

Don't forget the AUX CPU power connector(s)! Or the GPU power connector(s). Or the CPU fan. In other words check and double check all wires and connections and fans etc. If you really want to get serious then read the motherboard manual. The relevant sections are really not that long.

I will definitely read through the manual in the next few days since it's my days off, and will read it again before I touch my components and get started.

Edit: Also, should I buy myself a pair of static proof gloves, or will keeping one hand on my case suffice if I'm careful?

One last question, do I need thermal paste for my CM Hyper 212 Evo? If so, I bought some from Arctic cooling.

Just thought I'd ask first before building, my RAM is going to be here on Tuesday.

Thanks.
