ok so i've finally decided to upgrade my computer to an SSD. I bought my computer through CyberpowerPC. I have my windows product key but no install disk. Do I just need to burn a copy of the windows ISO file to a dvd and then install windows onto the SSD using the windows key? It won't matter that windows will be on both my new SSD and my old HDD correct?

Solution
Correct. Download the relevant Windows ISO from here:

Have only the SSD connected
Install.
Activate with your existing key.
It may balk at activation, in which case you do it via the phone robot.

Download system iso file directly from microsoft site. There you will be able to install Windows with your product key. Also when you install your system on ssd, format you HDD also, i think there would be a conflict between.

Have fun

ok. i already have the ISO file downloaded, I just wanted to verify that is all. thanks for the format HDD reply too, i would have forgotten.

Also, another question on the same topic (basically).

if i was upgrading my entire system (mobo, cpu, etc etc) but keeping my old hard drive, would that be the same? Or would I need a new copy of windows?

If you would upgrade your hardware for more then 3 components at the same time i would reinstall system just to be sure everything is up to date ;)

Depends on your version of Windows 7. If Retail, that is no problem. Reinstall as needed.

If OEM, that is licensed to the original motherboard.
MS may or may not allow that license on a new motherboard (the only critical part), but that are under no obligation to do so. You may have to activate through the phone robot.
Try it and see what happens.
