Has anybody upgraded from i5 to an i7? Worth it, or no?

I have the upgrade itch and the only thing I can really think of since I game on 1080p and would like to record gameplay footage finally is an upgrade to an i7 3770k since the Xeon's can't overclock.

Does hyperthreading help THAT much to be worth 300+ dollars? Or should I just get an SSD for my laptop instead and call it a day?

Looking for some first hand experience if anybody has went from an i5 to i7 setup and was stuff really worth the price or not.

Unless your CPU is struggling with tasks on a day to day basis, I'm gonna assume that no it wouldn't be worth the extra effort. I see people all the time, whether that be on Twitch or other some such site, that stream and record HD videos with high end i5's. Editing those videos, however, would be a different story. That's where an upgrade might be justifiable.
