Below I will list system Specs..
Just bought an msi r9 280x to crossfire with my xfx 7950 black. I had to put both crossfire bridges on in order for card to work.
I have the 7950 in the first slot since I didn't have a mini HDMI to dvi converter for my 3rd monitor. I'm not gaining any fps that I can notice. Is this because I have the 7950 in first slot?
I did a bench mark test on 3 settings..
1) cross fired with 7950 overclocked to match r9 clock speed.
2) cross fired with out Over clocked
3) not Crossfired only 7950
They all were better in different ways, nothing really showed a big increase with crossfire on.
I made sure crossfire was enabled in CCC, and double checked with GPU z. And both showed it was.

16g ram
1 GHz thermaltake pws
Windows 8
3 32" dell monitors
