i have a problem in my PC,when playing BF3 or BF4 set in lowest/highest graphic then sometimes (every few minutes) CPU gone 255°C for few seconds makes games super-laggy.
well i was wondering what causing this problem since i just bought a better HSF (212evo).
i wouldn't mind buying a new CPU + mobo, but i really need to know that those are necessary.

my PC specs:
phenom II X4 970 (not oc)
msi 870-C45 FX v2
2x4gb RAM
hd 6850
500gb seagate
seasonic 550w

Clearly something is wrong with the program that is stating the processor's temperature. 255c is extremely hot and it could instantly fry your processor. Processors should have an overheating prevention by shutting down when the temperature gets too high, and most desktop processors can't handle above 100c before shutting down.

255C is not possible since the BGA solder balls between the silicon die and substrate probably have a melting point in the 150-180C range. This reading is necessarily out-of-range which means either your software is not reading the numbers right or the circuitry that provides the numbers is defective.

Try different software and if they all read the same erroneous numbers then the thermal diode readout circuitry on the CPU is likely defective. Then again, thermal management should be using those to reduce core clock when overheating so the CPU being "stuck" at 255C should cause the CPU to throttle down to minimum speed or shut down.

im using HWmonitor.
i dont know what the real temp if 255°C is wrong, BUT IM SURE without using any programs my pc still lags like that.
oh, and only in gaming..

@InvalidError i don't have scholarship/expertise in electricity.

so there is really something broken (hardware) in mobo and i should buy another since it's not fix-able ?

It posts 255 degrees as that is the range for values. It happens when the program 'glitches' and doesn't report correctly. The MSI 870 has minimal power delivery, and it could just be overpowered by the CPU, which would downclock the CPU for a bit (the motherboard may be overheating).

the motherboard "maybe" overheating, well that's somethin new.
so can i pick solution to buy a new motherboard?

well these are the options left here:
- Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3
- Asus M5A97 Evo R2.
- MSI 990FXA-GD65
- ASRock 990FX Extreme3

or
are there anything i can do to fix that?

PS: why is it only "overheat" in battlefield, but not other games (HoN) ?
