Installing Os on Hd but still need Hd to transfer stuff? LOL

ok i know title is a little confusing.

Basically, i built a new system, have a external hd lying around so decided to use that instead of buying another 3.5 inch drive.

What i want to do is; i have stuff on the hd that i need to keep but i want to install win 7 on it.
Now i know as soon as i install win 7 my old stuff will be deleted so how do i go about my issue?

I was thinking either

1; partitioning the drive leaving a little space to hold my files ( 1.5 tb free for new system, 300g as a 'hold'.

or 2; Moving all my files through usb to a laptop with usb 3.0 (;D), installing the Os on the Hd then transferring the files back - issue with this is, I' m not sure how i would get the files back?

what should i do?

Your Option 1: Not feasible if there's just a single partition on it with no unallocated space, since you would first have to delete that partition (which destroys your files) in order create new ones.

Your Option 2 is therefore the only game in town, unless you buy a new hard drive.

For option one, i was thinking; putting the files onto my laptop then partition the drive. Transfer files back to new partition (say d:). Install windows in primary partition (say C:). Then once i've logged on, go onto my computer, D: and simply copy paste the files i need back to my desktop.

But for option 2 am i able to format the drive, install OS then plug the hd into my laptop through usb to transfer files?

what i meant was,

install O.s onto the Hd,
then plug that in via usb or sata to laptop
then transfer my old files over to new hd

but that doesnt work ahaha!

I've just installed os and buying a 32gb usb to transfer them! :D

thanks for the help though
