New to PC Gaming - Must Play Games, Old and New!

Hi, Up to press I've bought/played/finished Severence: Blade of Darkness, Return to Castle Wolfestein, Far Cry (1), The Witcher, Doom 3 and Call of Duty 2. Based on these kinds of games, what other great games should I be looking for, both old(er) and new?

Edit: Add F.E.A.R. to the list!

Steam sale should be coming up in the next month or so, you could pick up quite a few of these on sale.
  4. All good adds, can't believe I forgot the BioShock series.

I forgot the venerable S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series.

It's not a shooter, but it's a ton of fun, XCOM: Enemy Unknown / Enemy Within
  5. These should keep me going for a while - thanks!
  6. I feel a moral obligation to throw in Starcraft (with all the expansions). Then again, that might just be my childhood talking.
  7. Play Arcanum -of steamworks and magic obscura.
