Hello, I had this idea of upgrading my GPU. Currently I am running a Ati HD 5670 which is not sufficient anymore for the latest games. I thought of upgrading to an Asus DCUII Top Amd R9 280x. Because it has a really good price to performance ratio in my country. It costs about 230 eur. And it should be able to run the newer games for a while. so i think it is pretty future proof. But i have one issue though, i only have a 500W power supply which is 80 plus bronze. The cpu i run at is an Intel I5 760 which consumes 95W and slightly overclocked. I am running also 3 HDDs one at 7200 rpm and two at 5400. I also am running a CM seidon I20M. and also 4 chassis fans. I am not sure whether my PSU will be enough since i might overclock it slightly. I do not want to burn out my PCIE slot or PSU.

More about : 280x run 500w psu

if your psu has at least 30A on the 12v rail then it will suffice for 280x. for o/c, though better have more

It is an energyknight ss-500ET. I know, the brand is not very known but it is ranked at 80 plus bronze

your psu is an quality one from seasonic, has the cables needed (1x6pin + 1x2+6pin) and with combined 12v rail of 34A it is sufficient for your setup. go easy on overclocking though

After a bit of Googling it turns out that PSU is made by Seasonic (= the best or at least damn close to it) so you should be fine.

You're cutting it pretty close bro. How old is your energyknight psu? If it is getting old, than just get a new one. Here is a link to the corsair psu finder. It will tell you how many watts you need. http://www.corsair.com/en-us/psu-finder

Thanks for the info. i still might consider it though. the PSUs are not that expensive, but i just do not want to recable my whole system :D

So i guess ill start with that, and after a while if i feel like it i might upgrade to something like an corsair RM750 or so. just to have the room for some sweet overclocking :)  oh, btw will i have to use some certain cables or just plug in the 6 pin and 8 pin, becasue i know that some PSUs with more 6 or 8 pins have different Ampers on each. But i think i only have the 6 and 8 pin though

i would avoid the cx - rm from corsair. i would prefer a 650w, would be more than enough for any single gpu configuration and o/c as much as you want.honestly, even a 550w would easily suffice

Oh ok, thanks :D  but maybe after a few years like 2 or so i might put it up in CrossFireX. so there i would need that 750W or more PSU, but for now ill hang on to this. oh and i figured i have 2x 6 pin and one 8 pin. Does it matter which ones i plug in? or it doesnt matter which one of the 2 6 pins i plug in?

in the computer world, 2 years is a lot of time, bottleneck issues will quickly emerge,as your cpu is getting rather old. if i would be orclocking on your current system i would the cpu to keep up pace with 280x!

The Cpu is already Oced and i would oveclock it further if i were to add another GPU. or by that time i might aswell build a new rig.
