Hi,

I have a Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 AMD3+ platform. Im going to reapply thermal paste on the CPU, cuz I did abit too much last time. Then, can I also apply some new thermal paste on the VRM's? Or do the heatsinks on that MOBO have the "foam" thingy?

More about : apply thermal paste vrm heatsinks

It would probably have to be non-conductive and you should check to see what kind of contact your heatsink has (ie. is it loose and needs the thermal pad / foam thingy)... I've been thinking of doing something like that, purchasing individual copper sinks that would be attached to the VRMs via a pad or a thermal glue.

Well, on my MOBO stated, there is already heatsinks on the VRM's. NB and SB aswell, but I dont know if its pads or if it's just thermal paste.. Anyways, I placed a stock AMD FX-4300 CPU fan on the VRM's. I managed to get 10 degrees celsius less! :)  Awesome

Well.. This might sound fked up, but it works :p

I just took some doublesided tape foams thingys, lol, and placed it on the network hub inside the pc, and placed the fan there... :p  But i must keep the rig on the side, it cant be standing up, then the fan MIGHT fall down on the graphic card xD

But, I have made a lil safety precaution.. xD I tied it to the 12V cable, so if I do so the computer stands up, and IF the fan looses from its tape, it will probably not hit the graphic card, cuz its tied.. :p

Thanks, I've seen people just set them on top of the vrms if they are on a test bench but I wondered if the fan would move around.

Well, i dont know.. Teoraticly, yea it should... But mine is only mounted with some weak doublesided tape pads. If I place the computer so it stands like it should do, the fan will drop on the graphic card.. So it isnt "hard mounted" haha..

And for some reason, the overall temperatures is increased if I have the sidecase closed.. I have 2 case fans, one blowing in, one blowing out. Mounted on the back of the case. The PSU is mounted in old fashioned way. (top). And a hyper evo 212, with the fan blowing out to the back..
