I currently have an acer 7745g with core i3-330m with a chipset 55 and rPGA989 socket.
I want to upgrade the CPU. I found a i7-2820qm but it is said it's FCPGA-988.

According to my research, it's 2nd gen and mine is 1st gen. My BIOS update is october 2011 and the i-7 i'm looking for was realeased in the beggining of 2011.
I also found rPGA989 works fine with 988A (G1) and 988B (G2).

Before buying the i7 cpu, I'd like more advises from experimented users since i just a noob here.

Probably not. The i7-2820QM is a Socket G2 (rPGA988B), which is not compatible with the Socket G1 (rPGA988A).

While the rPGA989 socket is technically supposed to be able to take both Socket G1 & G2 CPUs, I'm not 100% sure that the laptop's board actually has that socket. The 2 CPUs listed specifically as being supported (http://www.lapspecs.com/detail/acer+aspire+7745g) are both Socket G1.

You are right :) Thank you very much for your answer.

I also found that i7-720qm works and I was about to take it for its price (around 90$) but i'm not sure if it's better to take stronger CPU like i7-740qm (100$) or i7-840qm (160$) (all G1).

I'm just worrying about price-performance ratio now when it comes with gaming. I have ATI radeon HD 5650 and I wonder if I should choose the i7-720qm or 740qm or 840qm :/

I'm pretty sure it has a rPGA989 socket. At least according to cpu_z, everest and SIW. I didnt take time to open my laptop to see it with my eyes.

Anyway does anyone think my motherboard will run the 2820qm or not? since I know its last bios update is newer than the cpu release date.
