I am intending to upgrade from my current i3 540 to an i5 3570 when I next get paid, I am just wondering will I notice much of a difference in games etc with this upgrade?

My current computer specs are
Gigabyte Z77-DS3h (I have no put this in yet as my i3 has a different socket so I have to wait for my new cpu)
GTX 660ti
4gb ram
Windows 7 64 bit
600W corsair bronze

So yeah my main question is will this be worth the upgrade and will I notice much difference?

You are joking right? We are talking about a gen 1 i3 dual core, without HT, to a gen 3 quad i5. That is quite a difference in performance. Gen 1 i3 really wasn't much faster than Wolfdale core 2. OP, if your budget allows for it, a Xeon 1230v2 is a good option as well. It is an i7 without IGP and will perform similar to an i7 3770. They are generally not much more than a 3570k. ;)

i5 3570 as I don't plan on overclocking
I feel as if my cpu is holding me back on most games, I also plan on upgrading to 8GB ram but it's not as important at the moment as I know it won't make much of a difference.

It's going to be an extremely noticeable upgrade, considering the fact that i5 is a quad vs. the dual cores on the i3. It's fine if you get the locked version, but if you do plan on overclocking to 4.0, the z77 allows you to push the turbo multiplier to 4.0 (which is handy). It is also more power efficient per watt.

Heres the reference for pure benchmarking;

Hyperthreading can never take the place of true physical cores.

Thanks for this! I would spend the extra money and get the K version of the 3570 and OC it, but I am worried about temperatures, as I only have a standard cpu fan, no special cooling system at all, or would a standard fan be fine for this? Everyone has told me I will get high temperatures if I OC and still have a normal fan.

For Overclocking the Stock fan is crap, the Coolermaster Hyper 212 is a great choice.

What kind of temperatures would I get with this do you know?

I take it the fan that comes with the 3570 will be no good if I end up going for a OC, I might look into paying the extra money for the K version and buying the coolermaster hyper 212

Here are some Benchmarks:

A lot of people use this Heatsink so it's an amazing but cost effective cooler.
