i would like to make my ssd a boot drive only. As it is only 120gb and i have another 2tb western digital hard drive so i would like to have all my programmes installed onto my 2tb hard drive and keep my ssd as a boot drive. i have a msi z87-gd65 gaming motherboard.i am running windows 7 home premium.

Well, that's easy enough to do:
1) wipe both drives
2) make sure the SSD is connected to the lowest numbered sata port (usually sata0), the HDD to sata1.
3) boot the computer, install Win7 to the SSD.
4) after Win7 is installed, create a directory on the HDD (which should be the D: drive) called "Program Files"
5) any programs you install afterwards just make sure you install to the D:\Program Files\ directory.
Piece of cake, right?

A 120GB drive can hold the OS AND a LOT of applications.
My 120drive is currently ~51GB used, with ALL of my applications on it. Office, video editing, Paintshop Pro, Adobe Lightroom, etc, etc, etc.
Everything but games.
For all your other static files, you can redirect where they are stored quite easily.

Power down
Unhook the HDD
See if it boots.
The recommendation to have ONLY the SSD connected stems from the likelihood of getting the System Reserved boot partition ending up on the second drive. Lose that drive, and no boot for you.
Having only one drive installed prevents this.
