Any way to tell whether my cpu is bad?

So, I have a problem because of a very silly mistake I made. I am trying to put together a computer for a friend using some old parts I have from previous builds and some new hardware they are buying. The system I am trying to complete is an Athlon II x3 455, 9600gt on an MSI 760gm-p23 mobo.

This over has a single atx 4pin CPU power header, and when I was trying to hook up the PSU I made the mistake of inserting this backwards... After powering on the system this way, I am almost certain I have fried the motherboard.

The good news in my case is that am3 mobos are very cheap on eBay! New cpus are not though... So my question, was before I go out and buy a new motherboard is there anything you recommend to try and see if I fried the cpu as well? Unfortunately I do not have access to another board with an am3 socket.

I should also provide some more information, maybe I haven't actually fried the board, and if you think that is a possibility I welcome any suggestions! :)

I have found that the PSU is still good, I have used it to power up 2 other systems. I have 'breadboarded' the system as well and the motherboard with all components plugged in will power on, but not make any audible noises (it does have a mobo speaker)

If I take the ram out, I do get the 3 long beeps I am accustomed to hearing in the case of a memory problem. However, with everything plugged in there are no beeps and nothing displayed on screen, although the system, gpu and cpu fans all spin up as in a a normal boot. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated :)

Solution
There's no way to test a CPU w/o a MB to put it in. You can visually check the underside to see if there is any obvious burnt pins.
