Upgrading mob and cpu

I am swapping out my fx 6300 and am3+ msi mobo for an asus z87 and core i5 4670k. I have windows 8.1 and the retail version. What are the steps I need to take before and after I install the new parts. I can never get any clear answers, some people say I just need to swap em out and the new parts will be detected and some say that I will lose all my HDD data if I do this. Thank you

I had a huge problem when I changed motherboards that I forgot to remove the old motherboard drivers. I had to completely reinstall Windows and transfer al my files over from the Windows.old file to the new one.
