So earlier i bought a HDMI to vga converter (Link is below)... and I plugged it in and it showed my ps3 screen! I was happy because Ive had past ones not work. But then my monitor went into power saving mode :( . So it turned it on and back off, then it went back into power saving mode. So basically I see the Ps3 screen for a few seconds and then it goes black. Any help???? I have some old Lenovo monitor that was given to me for free, and I cant buy a new one.

Solution
Try resetting your PS3's video settings to default. Do this by pressing and holding down the start button. You'll hear the beep when it turns on, but keep your finger there until you hear a beep after that, then remove your finger. When it starts, it sets the settings to the lowest, universal settings that should work on most devices, see if your monitor will display that. Then adjust your video settings accordingly.

The monitor your friend gave you could be less than the resolution the PS3 is trying to output at and that's what's causing the monitor to drop the PS3's video signal. You could look up the serial # of the lenovo monitor to find out it's max resolution. If your PS3 shows up, set it to the closest resolution you can get...

If your PS3 shows up, set it to the closest resolution you can get (720p if your monitor is 1366x768, or 1080p if its 1920x1080) and you should be fine.
