I am making a new build

and i am buying both a 120 gb pny xlr8 and a 1 tb wd blue.

i do alot of fraps recording

what would get better frames?

recording games from the ssd onto the HDD

recording games from the ssd onto the ssd

or recording games from hdd to ssd

im only going to putting games i play most often on my ssd.

Solution
You dont want to record to the same drive you are gaming from so if the game is on the ssd then record to the hdd and vice versa but I would have to agree that you might not want to record to the ssd if you do alot of recording.

With SSD's you can read all you want but they wear when written to.
120Gb is not alot of room for recordings once you subtract out OS and Game space.

The good news is the PNY has 3000 write cycles of endurance so that still would mean ALOT of writing would need to be done to wear out the drive even over 5 years.

If what I have read is correct FRAPS creates very large files and even if recording to an SSD were a good idea the 120GB drive would simply not be large enough. In general, it's never a good idea to record video to the OS drive (if that is where you game is played from) as poptim stated. As for recording to an HDD you shouldn't notice a difference in quality or speed when editing. I know this is not the same as recording gameplay but I have recorded live events with a camcorder connected to a laptop and the footage captured on a secondary HDD and have not noticed any loss of quality either during editing or playback.

do you know of any good recorders that make small files?

when ever i try to record on my current computer which only has a 1tb 7200rpm hdd. my frames will stay constant, then dip for a couple seconds to around 10 fps......
