ok so here is my build

MOBO: ECS P4M900T-M2
PSU: Right-Tec Power supply P4-500W
CPU: Intel Pentium D 3.40GHz
RAM: Kingston 1GB DDR2 667MHz
SATA: 160GB Hard Drive
SATA: DVD/R Drive
IDE: 160GB Hard Drive
GPU: GeForce 8400GS 512MB DDR2

ok so my problem is once my computer boots up into windows and I log on my computer it seems to randomly freeze (this can take from 1min to 30min) sometimes freezes instantly once a program is loaded, when it freezes I have to turn the computer off

I was sure that it was the graphics card failing as I took it out and tested the onboard graphics to see if it would crash, I had it running for about 3 hours and it worked perfectly it didn't freeze not once

so I bought a new graphics card (a better one) thinking it would fix the freezing problem only to run into a different problem
my new GPU specs: EVGA GeForce GT 610 2GB DDR3
now when I first installed this card my computer was running perfect for about 3-4 days no problems at all then all of a sudden I turn it on and the screen just freezes at the loading windows screen but the computer is not frozen as I can hear the windows load up sound and can even log in and hear the sound but the display still shows the loading windows screen.

has anybody experienced this before and If so do you know what the problem is?

could it be a faulty card?

Or a PSU problem (although I doubt it is the card only requires 300w)

I would appreciate any help and would like to get this problem sorted as using onboard graphics really does suck I cant go on any games or open certain software as I run in graphic errors, I can barley watch videos as it is choppy/laggy

Anybody got any ideas what I can do?

I had random freezing behavior on one of my old PCs. Turned out i had a crappy PSU and i notice you have one too. Borrow a decent PSU and test your system with it, i'm prety sure that's the problem.

thanks for the fast replies guys, I will give those suggestions a try and report back

if it turns out to be the PSU does anybody know a good reliable brand and also should I get a more powerful one or get the same wattage as the one I have?

ok I have tried doing what scout_03 said I had just 1 hard drive(with os on) 1 stick of ram(which is all I have) and the gpu(tried both) and the problem persist.

I am going to purchase a new power unit over the weekend preferably a good branded reliable one to see if the problem is fixed. (could probably use a new PSU anyway as the one im using is about 8 years old)

if that doesn't work I will return the new GPU for a new one as it is probably faulty (it would be just my luck to get a faulty one)

and if after those and the problem persist then surely that would leave only the motherboard left as everything else has been replaced

if anyone has any better ideas please feel free to help as this problem has been a nightmare for me, I feel so lost with my computer not running properly

well thanks again and il post back if I manage to get the problem sorted

I decided to go with a Corsair CX500M 500W PSU and just waiting for it to be delivered so hopefully all in all it will fix my problem, otherwise its back to the drawing board
I will post back once I test the new PSU weather it fixes it or not
