So I have an EVGA Z87 Stinger mobo with EVGA's really awesome easy to use GUI bios, I have heard that the haswells when oc'd stability really depends on how fast the memory is running. I have 8gb of DDR3 running at 2400mhz with a CAS latency of 9. I also have an aftermarket CPU cooler made by zalmon that is pretty much pure copper in a case that is well ventilated. I've spent a lot of time with cable management.

So I guess the question is is how much can I even OC it? I actually did OC it from 3.5ghz to 4ghz and ran cpu burner and it is stable, how much more can I do it? I suppose in other words I'm asking others with Haswell i7k's how much they've oc'd theirs.

well, it depends on how lucky you are, every chip is different. usually, an i7 4770k can hit ~4.6 ghz-4.8 ghz with good cooling, so you should land around there. just make sure your temps stay under 80c, and keep the voltage reasonable :)

Well what if I keep the voltage on adaptive? Won't it just adjust the voltage for me because when I go into cpu-z it says the cpu is running at like 800mhz, then I turn on the cpu burner and it ramps up to 4ghz. I have heard that there is a curve with chips and that some are better than others and that if you can hit 4.8 stable you got a really good chip.

the haswell chips have the heat spreader glued on opposed to soldered directly on, so 4.8 ghz I would say is about a fair max to expect, any more would need a very nice liquid cooling loop id imagine.

All I know is that right now I'm at 4.2ghz and when I was in the bios when I went to 4.3 it froze right there. I had to turn the PSU off and restart it

what are the temps reported in the BIOS? usually a shutoff like that means not enough voltage, or too much voltage, or just too much heat.

Well I know for a fact it isn't a heat issue, I have voltage on adaptive mode, if I go to manual I have no idea what to put the voltage on

You're getting deep into discussion without even posting your build - per forum guideline. eg I don't know what power supply you have - which is often central to a good overclock.

Also - how many phases of power control does the mobo have? The more, the easier the overclock.

Seems a good mobo - http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/msi_z87m_review_ga...

which'll also tell you how they overclocked.
