Here's whats happening, i replaced my old mobo a Gigabyte ga-970a-d3 with a sabertooth 990fx r2.0 now I've kept all the same hardware i have been using even the old boot HDD and i have the windows disc from my old mobo install but no key unfortunately. Will i need to reformat my hard drive to get this to work? Is there anyway to keep my data and just reinstall windows? Will i have to reconnect my old mobo and back up all my files on to an external drive? Any additional information needed i will do my best to provide. Thanks in advance for any possible help I'm really not wanting to call a tech guy for a possibly minor issue.

So does you old hard drive show up on your new motherboard? I need more info. I always CLONE the hard drive before this task, just in case something goes wrong. If you have the key code you don't need to set your old motherboard back up again. But you need the key from your Windows installation in order to be able to call Microsoft for a new key.
So I need this info:
Is the old hard drive functioning properly with the old motharboard?
Does the new motherboard "see" the hard drive in the bios?
Have you tried to boot the new motherboard with the old hard drive and it's installed Operating system?
What version of Windows are you dealing with?
Is the old Hard drive IDE or SATA?

If you can, FIRST CLONE YOUR HARD TO A SPARE DRIVE FOR BACKUP. I have been able to reuse the old key when upgrading motherboards in the past. First get a key finder program and get the key from your installed Windows. Write it down. After you install the new motherboard and put everything together, try to boot it normally. You might get lucky and not have to reinstall Windows. If it wont run Windows, put the Windows DVD in and run (depending which version) the repair. When it gets to the key, put the key that you have written down in. (It probably wont activate). It will give you a phone number to call to activate it manually. Explain to them that you are just replacing the motherboard and you couldn't get the exact model. They PROBABLY will give you a new key and you will be all set. Good luck.
