XFX R9 280X Black + GA-Z77-DS3H = no boot

Hi guys,

I wonder if any of you clever bods could suggest a solution to my problem?

I've got a new XFX R9 280X DD Black Gfx card, but my machine will not boot with it in.

I've made some progress, particularly with the help of http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-2123880/xfx-280x-gigabyte-z77m-dh3-picture-boot.html (but the OP has a slightly different MoBo)

in that I've updated the BIOS to "F9" (the latest non-beta version), which made a slight difference - in that now the machine sounds like it's booting - i.e. the HDD clicks and whirrs as expected (it didn't prior to the BIOS update). But I've still got a completely blank screen (no POST messages etc.)

The machine still boots fine with the iGFX - it's how I'm posting this!

Mobo: Gigabyte GA-Z77-DS3H rev 1.0
CPU: Intel I5-3470
RAM: 8GB (1x8GB) DDR3 Corsair Vengeance Black CL10 1600
PSU: Coolermaster G650M
HHD1 (boot): Maxtor DiamondMax 21 STM3320820AS 320GB 7200RPM SATA
HDD2 (storage): Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200RPM SATA
OS: Windows 8.1 x64

I notice that on the Gigabyte website there's a beta BIOS (F11a) which alleges "Improve PCI Express x16 slot compatibility" which sounds promising, but as it's a beta version, I'm a little reluctant.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Have you got an internal speaker? Dost it give any post beeps?

Did the pc work before you changed to the r9 280x?

What card did you have prior? If you put it back does everything work?

Did you uninstall the old drivers after installing the new card drivers?

Have you changed the setup between the integrated graphics and the pcie graphics in bios?

Okay, thanks for the replies, I've made a lot of progress (I bit the bullet and flashed my BIOS to the beta F11a version, and I can now see one monitor (am using it to type this!!) However, I can't see the other one... Catalyst doesn't detect it at all (and neither does Windows).

I should point out that my monitors (a pair of LG W2043S) are both VGA only so are running thru DVI-I > VGA adapters - but both worked on my old GeForce G210.... is that my problem? either way, is there anyway I can get the pair of them running without buying a new monitor....?

and in answer to the questions (if they're still relevant):

Yes, there is an internal speaker, and it beeps once, as normal.
Yes, it worked fine before the R9
The old card was a crappy 512Mb GeForce G210, and yes, it still works with it back in (as does the integrated Intel HD gfx)
No, I didn't uninstall them, but then I'd not installed the new ones yet (I have now) but the Windows driver wouldn't've affected the BIOS/POST output display.
Yes, I've changed the BIOS to use the PCIE (called "PEG" in my BIOS) as it's primary gfx source.
I only have one stick of RAM (a single 8GB DDR3 1600) and I would've tried that had the beta BIOS update not worked!

Only one output is marked as both VGA+DVI, and it was the same on my 6870 - though that one only allowed the DVI->VGA adapter to be put in the compatible connector - unlike the XFX 280X which seemingly has a full "pinout" on both ports, but very likely it only supports analogue VGA on one of them, see this pic:
