My mother board says it has PCI Express 2.0 and i was wondering if i would be able to run 3.0. I have done some research, but am unsure if it can actually run 3.0 cards. I just want a straight forward answer before I put the money down on a pair of decent cards.

ASUS P8Z68-V PRO
Crossfire X 6770 HD,
12 Gig of Corsair Ram,
i7 Intel core 2600 3.4 GHz
GS Corsair 700 Power Supply

How much performance would be sacrificed in doing this?

Presently, NOT at all performance difference
Only high end graphics card(like dual gpu graphics card) suffer decrease in performance but only like 1-2%

basically none, the 2.0 lanes are difficult to fully saturate.

Graphics card with PCIe 3.0 are fully compatible with previous version like PCIe 2.0. There is not a much significant performance difference if PCIe 3.0 card is installed on PCIe 2.0 except for high end graphics cards but that would be marginal.

You can safely install PCIe 3.0 card on PCIe 2.0 slot.
