Hi guys just built myself a new pc and im trying to install windows 8.1 onto it without an optical drive. i found this link and it seems legit for using a flash drive for the boot but im a little concerned about it since it requires me to enter my 25 digit product key

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media

im confused as to whether this will cause windows 8.1 to be installed on my current pc and not the new system i have built

thanks for any help in advance!

That is the official downloader for Windows 8.1 from Microsoft it can be used to re-download Windows 8.1 from Microsofts servers. It gives you the option of setting up Flash Media, an ISO, or installing onto the current system after it has downloaded your copy of Windows 8.1. It just uses your Key to verify that you own windows 8.1 and have a version that is eligible for that service (certain keys don't work with it - OEM keys from my own personal experience don't seem to work).

If that doesn't work for you. You can try something like the Universal USB installer -> http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/
