Hi,

First off, I'm new here - sorry if I've posted this in the wrong place.

As the title suggests, I'm looking to build a new media server that also serves as a HTPC.

My current hardware and setup:

- onkyo receiver

- 55" LED TV which connects to the receiver.

- XBOX 360 which connects to the receiver.

- HTPC which connects to the receiver.

- HTPC has both media browser 3 server and client (classic) setup.

- QNAP TS-412 Nas containing 12TB of media.

- HTPC, Qnap, xbox, receiver and TV is connected directly (wired) to the switch.

- 2 old laptops in 2 separate bedrooms which has MB3 theater setup connecting to TV via HDMI, wireless to router.

The HTPC is an i3 Clarkdale 3.06Ghz in an antec casing which I have for nearly 4 years now.

It's still pretty good. But I'm now at the stage that my qnap NAS no longer has the enough space to hold all my media.

I also have a few android devices (around 3 - 4 ) at home and would like to do transcoding and streaming from the HTPC/server (both 720 and 1080).

What I'm thinking is to build a new HTPC which also server as a 'NAS'.

No raid is required, I can have raid setup in the qnap which can store all the important stuffs.

The new htpc / media server will just be single disks, used to store movies and musics, transcoding, and since it's going to be on 24/7 and it's next to the living room TV, will be used as media client too.

It does not need to be silent, I'm expecting it have 6 x 4TB hard disk. Reasonably 'not loud' is fine.

Low power as can be.

I'll be moving my current HTPC to the room.

Below is the hardware I came up with. Can anyone please review them and give some comments? Sensible ? Overkill? Better options ?

Fractal Design Define R4 Mid Tower

Intel Haswell Core i5 4570S 2.9Ghz 6MB LGA1150 (65W)

OR

Intel Haswell Core i5 4570 3.20GHz 6MB LGA1150 (84W)

Both the same price, one is lower wattage the other better frequency ?

Asrock Z87M-Extreme4 Intel Z87 Haswell LGA1150 ( is this a good choice ? )

Samsung 840 EVO Series 120GB 2.5" SATA3 SSD

Corsair RM Series RM550 550W Fully Modular PSU 80Plus Gold

OR

Corsair RM Series RM450 450W Fully Modular PSU 80Plus Gold

Is 450W enough to power 6 hard disk and other peripherals ? I'll most probably move the blu-ray dvd and tv-tuner card from the old HTPC over.

Western Digital Caviar Red WD40EFRX 4TB 64MB 6Gb/s SATA3

OR

Seagate NAS HDD ST4000VN000 4TB 64MB 6GB/s SATA3

Any recommendation between this two ? I'll start with 2 hard disk and slowly add-on as required.

Corsair CMY16GX3M2A1600C9B Vengeance Pro 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3-1600 CL9

Do i need an aftermarket CPU cooler? If so, any recommendation for my setup?

The Frantac Design casing should also come with 2 Silent Series R2 fans. Aside from the CPU, I'm thinking it should be enough to keep everything else at optimal temperature?

I'll just be using in the internal GPU, I suppose it'll be good enough to play 1080s and 3Ds ?

I currently use the Veris remote that comes with Antec. Works - but not the best. And will be going with the old HTPC when it goes to the room.

Should I get a Harmony remote or one of the wireless keyboard/mouse remote? Any recommendation?

Advice, comments, bashing...all welcome.

Thanks for the feedback. I would have thought the 4600 HD integrated graphics that comes with Haswell is more than enough to play any movies - 1080p or upscaling , and 3D.
The Frantac define R4 comes in Black Pearl, Titanium Grey and Arctic White. I'm thinking the black pearl will be a good color since the receiver, xbox and speakers are all black.
I already have a tv tuner card.

I wouldn't be using this for games. Maybe just some kids game when extended family come for a visit, nothing hardcore and they have the xbox anyway.
I have another separate desktop which I use for games, etc.
If somehow i decided to play games on the bigscreen, maybe than I'll think of adding a dedicated graphic card.
For now, I'm just thinking of using this new box as a media server, some sort of NAS or file server and maybe torrents.

Do you think the selected hardware is a good choice ?
