Trying to reset my computer so it will go into standby mode when not being used

I have a dell computer and the screen would go black and the fan in the machine would stop ( I assume this is the standby mode) I found this most useful as could leave it on 24/7 and run my scans in the night, but my computer crashed and I had to have it reconfigured and a new hardrive now the screen just stays on all the time,-------Can anyone help me to reset it as it was before?

Hello

Go to start and type Power Options. Open it. Whatever plan you are on, click change plan settings. Then change the both options you see to the desired time you want. You can find more options in 'Change advanced power settings'.

Update : Just noticed you are on Windows XP. Sorry but I am not sure how exactly to do it in XP. But I am sure you will find the power options in control Panel
