In the process of building a new PC - installing Windows Pro 8.1 64-bit OS (8 GB RAM). Which Internet Security software is best in terms of: (1) identifying and eliminating malware; (2) firewall; (3) resource use; (4) compatibility with OS; 5) ease of use in general. Reviews in general list BitDefender & Kaspersky as #1 & #2 pretty much generally but also heard horror stories about each and want to get REAL PEOPLE with REAL EXPERIENCE! I really want a complete suite of tools whether it be one program or several it does not matter to me - though I am the only user of this pc so won't need site blocking. Thanks for your help!

I personally do not use a traditional one. Microsoft Security Essentials is free. I use that paired with knowledge and I have never had an issue.

right now you might be sitting on a badass root kit and someone in Azerbaijan knows your credit card number , home address and watches you through your webcam most nights just because they can .
I do agree that knowledge is your best defense .
But it will never hurt to use a free antivirus and firewall .
AVAST is easily the best free virus scanner IMO , and Comodo firewall works well too at zero cost .
With both you should do custom installs so they dont load other programs you may not want . AVAST tries to install Google Chrome browser ......... etc
CNET reviews indicate it Crashes Windows 8.1. Just tried to install it myself. It Crashed Windows 8.1.
On the Comodo uninstall, it went into infinite "updating". Had to unplug the pc and restart pc twice.
Wish I would have read CNET reviews first and saw it was a problem for others.
I too use Windows Defender. Kapaskey 1 year free install just ran out. It rarely caught what Malware Bytes (another 1 year free) caught.
So, I am still not sure what should be used in addition to Windows Defender.
