My kids loved those older games they could play on my decade old desktop with xp. We have newer laptops of course but they dont play those games and Ive tried everything. Can I buy a cheap desktop with 7 or 8, and replace them with xp.Will they still function?Or maybe buy the older components and build a cheap system? If you have ideas about either of these things please help me. Dont bother to promote 7 or 8.

You might want to look at Microsoft's Virtual PC program. So long as you have an XP install disk handy, you can create a virtual XP machine and run programs and games off that. Typically it's easier to make work than compatibility modes. And if you're concerned about security, you can just disable any internet access on the virtual PC and then it'll be no issue.

most likely you will have to buy a system running on intel 8x series chipset or older if you plan to build your own. or prebuilt products that came out 2 years ago at least will most likely work. always check the manufacture website to confirm if the product has windows xp drivers

The problem is that most of the new systems with Windows 7 or 8 come with 64-bit versions of the operating system (i.e. Windows). These can run 32-bit and 64-bit games fairly well. However if you were to run a 16-bit game, like say RoadRash, it wouldn't work.

One way around is sideloading/sidebooting a 32-bit version of these OS or Windows XP. They should run these games fine. Also that way its much cheaper than spending $200 on a new cheap system that will just not give you any returns.

Another better way around is the use of Virtualization. You can use DOSBox to play games. Check this link: here

In fact you can even use Virtualisation tools like VMWare and Oracle VirtualBox to actually run a Virtual 32-bit OS inside your system. If you are new to this, check this link: here

What happened to the decade-old desktop? It seems a bit pointless trying to make a modern computer behave like something 10 years old if that one did the job.

It's a really bad idea to run Windows XP nowadays on a computer that is connected to the Internet. As others have said most games should run fine on a more modern OS.

If you're really stuck on the idea of XP then just buy a cheap, old PC from eBay; it will be far more satisfactory than trying to put old wine in a new bottle.
