Hello!
I have this laptop, a Asus (Serial numger: CAB0CX21977942A). For some odd reason it will not start up. Now, this computer was only a year old this Christmas. It wont boot what so ever and all it dose is it goes to the Recovery Manager that lists off options that dose not work, too (ie. Debugging Mode, Safe Mode, etc..). Anyway, so I thought if I got Windows 7 or Windows 8 and put it on a thumbdrive (mounted it, not using the ISO) you would think that changing the boot sequence in the BIOS to boot to the USB Drive, it would. NOPE! It dose not! But, this may help. There is a error that it displays when it is on the Recovery page. Error, the file may have been deleted or may contain errors. This file is: hal.ddl or hll.ddl (I can not remember). I have watched various YouTube videos looking up how to boot from a USB drive and I am doing the exact same thing they all tell me to do. I am clueless!

Anyway, I am going to list the sequence of events:
1. Press start button.
2. The PC sits for about 5 mins with the screen's pixels lit up, nothing being displayed.
3. Displays the Asus logo with a black background, for about 2 mins.
4. Displays the Asus logo with a black background. At the bottom of the screen it says: Starting Recovery Manager. This displays for about 2 mins.
5. Revovery Manager displays. Tells me that the hal.ddl or the hll.ddl is missing, and 3 options to go to the Firmware thing (BIOS), Restart PC or List of options (where it displays the Debugging mode, Safe Mode, etc). This stays on the screen for about 5 mins, then the PC shuts down.

If someone has any idea please help me. I think that Toms Hardware is a better place than Asus tech support. Like I said, please help. I have tried many things and all have failed! Thank you so much!

My idea is to call tech support and have them guide you through it.....should still be under warranty. Pre-built stuff has unique things loaded on it that make normal recovery methods using any OS CD not practical. Laptops manufacturers typically have a button ya can press on bootup which restores unit to the condition it left the factory.... other option, use the Rescue CD

1. Restart your ASUS laptop and press the “F9” key while the computer is booting up. This will open the boot screen. Select "Recover Windows to Entire HD" and press "Enter."
2. Press “Y” three times when asked if you are sure that you want to restore. The laptop will restore the...

3. Approve the license agreement, then select your “Language preference.” Enter your name into the box and click “Next.”
4. Enter your password twice on the next screen and select “Next.” Enter the time zone and date information, then select “Next.” Select “Finish” on the next screen and the computer will reboot.
