Awhile back I found a used Phenom II X2 B59 (3.4GHZ) dual core processor on ebay for dirt cheap. I added it to my collection of unnecessary processors. Being bored recently, I decided to put it in an AM3 MB I had and play around with it. I was pleasantly surprised... It unlocked to a stable quad core, Even better, I got it to a stable 3.74GHZ. Now that it is the equivalent of a stock Phenom II X4 980BE, I was thinking of pairing it up with a decent card.

What do you think would be the top end card that this old Phenom II could keep up with? I'm thinking R9-280/GTX 760. Too much? I could live with a little BN. And I might be able to bump up the clock a bit more because it is totally stable with Intel Burn Test and Prime95 where I have it now. I stopped there because I didn't want to get greedy.

(MSI 785GM-E65 MB, 8GB @ 1740MHZ, Rosewill HIVE 750W)

Yeah, in games from SC2 to planetside 2 to Diablo 3, My graphics card will hit max load almost at the exact same time my CPU does. PS2 is at 98% GPU to 100% CPU, so a 1% bottleneck technically haha.

I have a 965BE at 3.8Ghz (if I remember correctly, it's my kids machine) and it runs pretty well with a 7850. Sure there are cases like in big battles in PlanetSide 2 where it's obvious that the poor little CPU can't keep up, but in most cases it runs pretty smoothly. I don't think the 280 or 760 are too far out of the question, especially if you like to run with maxed out AA settings.

Owner of a Phenom II X4 965, 3.8ghz and 7850 here.

It runs rather well, plays most games from 2011-late 2013 usually near 60 fps if you tweak the settings a bit. It can't run straight up ultra settings usually, but it'll do high, or medium with mixed settings without a peep.

That GPU range will probably be the best for ya.

The 265 is actually 5-10% tougher than a 7850. While the 750Ti trades blows with it. The 60W TDP on the 750Ti's real nice though, but I dunno if it is worth the performance trade-off.

Yikes! I doubt I can get this business class processor up to 4.22GHZ. lol
But I'm going to try to go a bit higher. Not bad for a CPU that started out as a dual core.
Although the MB is pretty decent for OC'ing.
