Power supply failure? Burning smell?

I was playing some Diablo III tonight when all of the sudden, my monitors shut off and my PC rebooted. A screen came up saying that my PC just had a power surge and ASUS power surge protector was activated. My dumb self kept playing D3 after messing around for a few minutes thinking it was just a weird incident. Not any surprise, 5 minutes into that session the same thing happened again except this time my screen is just black and there is no booting back. The fans still power on and there are green LEDs lit up on my MoBo, so I'm hoping this is just going to be as simple as replacing my PSU. Is ther a possibility I burned my MoBo when I powered my computer back on the first time? The fact that I did not get the screen prompting me that ASUS surge protection wasn't activated alarms me. Any help is greatly appreciated. Hoping I can get a hold of another PSU tomorrow and test my issue.

Solution
all you can do is test the system with another psu to make sure you havent killed the whole pc. if it works then replace the dead psu.

Yeah I figured that was the best answer I could get. I will try and find a PSU this weekend to test it, of course this would happen on a Friday night! Hopefully I can find a store I can pick one up from so I don't have to wait til monday to get one shipped.

Yes I did smell burning, unplugged/shut off my PSU though.

yeah I know that much but was curious if anyone could give me more information based on the fact that my LEDs and fans are still powering up.

it depends on how the internals of the psu are configured. if it has separate rails it can kill 1 and still put power into the system.
there wont be enough to boot but it would still possibly light up the motherboard and the fans.
but i wouldnt even keep trying as you may kill something else on the system if your psu is delivering uneven or over powered voltages.

like i say mate if you keep putting power through the system you may damage other components so turn it off till you can test with another psu...
i would suggest you get ahold of a mate and ask to borrow theres if they have a minimum of 650w on a good brand rather than waiting to buy a new 1 as you may well have to buy other components 2.
