At the moment i have windows 7 ultimate installed on a normal hard drive but i am wanting to upgrade to a SSD just for my windows install and a game or two but keep my hard drive for everything else.

I think i am going to go with the SanDisk x210 SSD but i want to know how am i going to move or reinstall only my windows files to the ssd and keep everything else on the hdd.

Will upgrading to a ssd make much of a difference for me?

Specs:

Case:Aerocool VX-E pro
CPU: amd fx-6100
PSU: Corsair CX-600 V2
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-970A-D3
GPU:Sapphire Radeon HD7870 GHZ
HDD: WD caviar blue 500gb
RAM: Corsair Vengeance CMZ8GX3M2A1600C8 8gb ddr3

thanks

Hi Yosiah ,
an ssd is a good idea and will improve your windows and application loading times dramatically
at the moment the samsung evo are one of the best performing ssd's
It is worth doing
gaming will only improve loading/saving times not improve FPS ( frames per second )

so the Samsung 840 EVO Series 120GB SSD would be a better option than the Sandisk?

Once i plug in the SSd then what do I do? like how do i put windows on the ssd while keeping everything else on the hdd?

A while ago i saw a thread on optimizing a ssd to increase performance and increase life but i cannot find it again.

thanks

Well SSD does improvise data transfer speed. So definitely following the trend of upgrading to ssd will help you.

To install just simply use a bootable disk or usb & start the setup in your existing windows.

When asked for choose a full install (after restart the setup will automatically run & asks for it); & choose the ssd.

Copying or moving windows files won't help. your data will be safe in existing hdd

Be sure to close the thread with a correct answer & to ask until you get it sorted out. It'll help others too besides you.

thank you for the help, I want to do a fresh install of windows onto the SSD and then how do i copy my programs over? can i just copy them from the program files on the hdd to the program files on the ssd?

Also how much space is there on a 120gb ssd after it has been formatted?

You can copy data over but you have to re-install applications (programs)

After formatting there'll be about 80GB of usable space - about 30GB gets used as a recovery partition..

Of that 80GB, Windows will use about 30GB. And I've found some stuff eg Printer software, nVidia stuff, etc only will go onto my SSD too.
This leaves me with about 30GB spare. And you never want to fill up a SSD. Else they stop working.
