Mobo possibly broken. Test? Replacement?

I bought an old gaming PC off a mate, that he built. He gave me lots of spare bits with it, namely 2 Mobos. However, the 2 spares may be duff, and I suspect the original working one has gone too. I don't know how to test if a Mobo is broken, short of connecting it and trying it out. I've got 2 Asus P5N32-E SLI's and an Asus P5N-D. I'm fairly sure the P5N-D is bust, coz I get a screen warning about wrong USB voltage, even with only GPU , CPU and 1 fan attached. One of the P5N32-E's has a discoloured pin in the socket, so I suspect a short. The other one that was fitted and working looks ok, but neither give me anything on my monitor. My old PC has a Foxconn 45 CM Mobo that has an LG775 socket too, so I tried the gaming CPU (intel core 2 extreme X6800) in that old PC, but I also get nothing on monitor. I've tried the CPU that works in the Foxconn (Intel Celeron 440) in all the Asus boards with no joy. It's possible that both the gaming Mobo and CPU have failed. Is there a way to determine this, given what I have? Should I just get a new Mobo and CPU? If the latter, I have a very small budget, and while I'd like to upgrade the lot eventually, I want a cheap quick fix for now, I currently have a GeForce GTX 295 twin chip GPU with the gaming PC. I was looking to upgrade that to a GTX660 to enable DX 11, but I can't afford to do it all in one hit. All constructive input welcome. :)

Hmnn... I've no reason to suspect the PSU at all, and I'm certainly not worried about it exploding as in the linked article to the right of your answer. Also, just how am I supposed to update the BIOS when I get nothing but a blank screen?
