Hi I am looking to upgrade my processor for gaming. I play at 1280 x 1024 resolution and I'm happy to play at medium settings.

My PC Specs:
Athlon x2 7550 @ 2.5ghz
Radeon 4670 1GB
3Gb Ram

My computer model is a HP P6107UK

Here is the website for it: http://h20565.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/template.PAGE/public/kb/docDisplay?javax.portlet.begCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken&javax.portlet.endCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken&javax.portlet.prp_ba847bafb2a2d782fcbb0710b053ce01=wsrp-navigationalState%3DdocId%253Demr_na-c01779667-26%257CdocLocale%253D%257CcalledBy%253D&javax.portlet.tpst=ba847bafb2a2d782fcbb0710b053ce01&ac.admitted=1399119062392.876444892.492883150

(On the URL page it says Motherboard supports the following processor upgrades:)

Which processor would you recommend me purchasing? Also is it a hard task to upgrade the cpu?

Please don't suggest to completely build or purchase a new computer as i don't have money for that i just want to upgrade my processor so that i can be able get higher fps in games.

Thank you friends :) :) :)

You're welcome!

That seller has many good ratings, seems to be trustworthy.

And yes, it's totally fine to buy used CPU's, they don't get damaged that easily and can last 10 years and still work just fine. Unused Phenons II x4 costs more than 100 quid and you don't need that.

I have tried to find benchmarks, but I couldn't, even with that old graphics card. Today's applications can use 4 cores, and that's what a Phenom II x4 packs, exactly four cores. You'll see a good improvement in fps.

At the resolution you play on, yes the system should be able to play games for some years still :)

Hi!

Your best bet would be the Phenom II Quad core, the other processors are weaker for gaming.

And no, it's not hard to swap CPU's you just need to take off the cooler, unlock the latch that holds the CPU in place and swap the CPU's. Then you lock the latch and mount the cooler back on, simple as that :) If you're still unsure, watch some videos on youtube, to have an idea on what you need to do.

Hey, On the website though it says that

''NOTE: Only socket AM2+ processors are supported with this motherboard.''

and the only AM2+ proccessors on that list are:
''AMD Phenom Quad-Core (A) 9xxx series (AM2+)
AMD Phenom Triple-Core (T) 8xxx series (AM2+)''

Correct me if im wrong but wouldn't the Phenom II Quad core not be supported?

Look, an AM2+ motherboard can support even AM3 processors, as long as the maximum TDP is 95w.

And the Phenom II Quad core is supported as it is an AM3 processor and limited at 95W. I can understand your confusion, as there are several models of Phenom II Quad core. Only the Phenom II Quad Core 850 works on the motherboard.

Where do you live? So I can see if I find a processor being sold.

Hey, i will also look at other places to buy these processors. (9550 and 9650)

Btw, are these the two BEST proccesors i can get on my motherboard or are there other better supported ones available?

The best of the best Phenom II x4 you can get is the black edition, but the price is insanely higher, being 40 pounds (models I've suggested) to 100 pounds, rare phenom II x4 black edition. 100 quid is a lot of money to be invested on an old computer. Besides, the HP motherboards are stripped down in order to fit the whole package itself, not allowing extra features such as overclocking (overclocking voids most manufacturer's garantees anyway) and the Black Edition chips are meant to be overclocked. Since your motherboard cannot overclock, it would be a waste of money.

The thing is, you currently own a weak dual core, stepping to a stronger quad core WILL make a difference, and YOU'LL notice it on games.

Ahh okay thanks bro. I reaally really appreciate all the help you've given me. :)

I'm thinking of using this link:http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B0016KH7GS/ref=dp_olp_used?ie=UTF8&condition=used

And purchasing of the person called 'Crossbow7' for £52

Do you think that is a good deal?

Also do you think its safe to purchase a used one?

And what framerate and settings would i get with a 9550, 3gb ram and radeon 4670, would i be able to play latest games at 30fps medium settings for a few years?
Thanks again x :)

Would there be much difference upgrading from 3gb ram to 4gb ram?
would there be any difference upgrading from vista to windows 7 gaming wise got free copy (although i only have 45 processes on idle in vista)
Would games make use of my quad core cpu?

Due to a issue weird driver glitchy issue I've had ever since i bought my Radeon 4670 1gb ddr3 graphics card I've had to down clock the core clock from 750Mhz to 699Mhz. (has to be exactly under 700mhz otherwise crashes).
Have i lost out on much performance from doing that?
Weird enough my memory clock isnt affected by this issue.....would i get fps gains if i overclock my memory clock or not really?

Wow! xD

Ok, I'll try my best!

Yes, upgrading to 4 GB ram will help quite a bit.

Yes, definitely install Windows 7, the computer will feel better overall. Vista was a failure, Windows 7 was the fix.

Yes, newer games do use better the Quad Core CPU's.

It depends, if the seller has a decent rating, go for it. And yes you can use the Athlon's cooler on the Phenom II.

Downclocking that much really kills its performance! You should install the latest graphics card drivers!

Here's drivers for Windows Vista 32 bits: http://www2.ati.com/drivers/legacy/13-9-legacy_vista_win7_32_dd_ccc_whql.exe

And for 64 bits: http://www2.ati.com/drivers/legacy/13-9-legacy_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc_whql.exe

Choose the matching driver for the windows! Before installing the new driver, get rid of the old driver with this program :http://www.guru3d.com/files_details/display_driver_uninstaller_download.html

Restart and then install the new drivers, then restart to apply the changes.

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/304623-33-powercolor-4670-crash-games

Check this thread out...loads of people have the same problem! :(
Its not a psu problem as i have a 500W power supply.

Its some software problem as my core clock has to be exactly under 700Mhz otherwise mid game the driver will crash then recover.

I have the latest driver and people say they've tried many drivers and it still doesn't work...any help on that one buddy?

Hmm after reading that thread, and searching on google, I have to say that you're stuck with an underclocked video card, no solutions seem to show up, from years ago...

But you'll still notice a good improvement in games with the Phenom :)

Hmm yeah its unfortunate really i also tried checking on forums from years again and couldn't find any solution :/
funny enough if i overclock the memory clock it doesent crash....would there be an fps increase worth doing so?

Apparently my motherboard only supports up to 95watts: https://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=uk&dlc=en&docname=c01925534&lc=en&product=4064886#N424

So i think the fastest COMPATIBLE processor for me is the AMD Phenom 9750?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AMD-Phenom-X4-9750-2-4-GHz-Quad-Core-HD9750WCJ4BGH-Processor-/221403556468?pt=CPUs&hash=item338cae2a74

What do you think?
