What can hackers see?

So my ass of an older brother's coming home from school, and he's now a self-proclaimed computer whiz. To show off his newfound prowess, he wants to 'hack into our network', whatever that means. Now, can he see what I'm doing online? I don't use a computer, I use an iPad (and he's not touching that!), so he can't just pick that up. If I ckear the router, can he still see all that I do? And by the way, this is a one-time deal. He is only hacking into the system once.

Depends what he means "hack". Of course since he would know the password for the router he could capture and decode any wireless traffic. Also since he has physical access to the router he could likely insert a device to capture between the modem and the router if you have cable modem. And he could try the many attacks on other lan devices that only work after already have access to a trusted network.

If he thinks he can get into a correctly secured network without any physical access he will soon find he is wasting his time. The only thing he can see anyway is going to be stuff you expose to every ISP on the internet. So you MUST assume someone is monitoring at all times and anything that you actually care if someone get access...

It depends on what he is doing. A lot of time they just installed remote access support when you were not looking, and you just need to remove that, other times they may have some real skills and know a venerability in the OS, first thing I would do is patch windows, mac, and I suspect if you ran unices you'd already be doing this but any unix boxes you have [linux freebsd whatever] Then maybe resetup your router, hold reset button down to get back to defaults for like 30 seconds then follow instructions that way if he added anything poof its gone. Then call him and see what he can do and ask him how to stop it if he can get in. If the steps I gave you stop him, then he's just a bored kid, if they don't you might want to warn him that hacking other people without a contract for computer security checks is indeed a felony and that shit can haunt you for a long time. Most job apps ask if you have been convicted of one in the last 7 years.
