Goal: record 3 webcams in a billiards room from laptop in next room.
Equipment to Date:
3-Genius F100 webcams
3-runs Cat5e, 15', 20',40',
3-sets USB to RJ45 adapters.
1-8 port powered hub at laptop.
Software: Many Cam 4.0

Testing;
I have check that all three webcams work when connected directly to laptop.
I checked my home made Ethernet patch cables by connecting them to my router then the laptop all worked fine.

I connected a thumb drive to the all three runs and could view the contents on both short runs not on the 40'. I did get a power light on the 40'. I then inserted a powered USB hub at the end of the Cat 5e and tried again same result power at thumb drive no data at laptop.
Laptop recognizes cams 1-15' and cam 2-20', but does not recognize the longer 40' run of cam 3. software recognizes cams 1 and 2 but searches for signal with no result. Does not recognize cam 3.

Am I lacking power to run the webcams? Or is my design flawed from the start? I am open to any and all questions and suggestions to make this system work.

USB isn't designed for long distance runs like that, and was never intended to be run over Cat5e cable.

A powered hub in the middle of the run should fix it, though.

You really should be looking at ethernet based cameras, though.

Is that in the middle of each run? I have 3, 15', 20' and 40'. Please be more detailed if you have the time.

USB is generally limited to 15 feet. It relies on a return signal within xx time, and a cable that is too long messes that up.

I was referring to the 40' run.

I'm hoping that the round trip limits are between two nodes, rather than root hub to end device. If so, a hub in the middle might help. I haven't read the spec, though.

Right. A powered USB hub in the middle might do it, but ethernet cams would be better. Or BNC/RCA cameras
