Previously I've been using my external hard drive with a PC. When I connected to my mac I partitioned it (and I think I made the size of the partition the size of the hard drive, i.e. I overwrote it over the original data). Its been formatted to fit a mac. Is it possible to recover the previous files? They're really important.

It is indeed possible BUT the more you write over it the harder it is. There are lots of freeware programs out there that recover partitions etc. How much did you use it after you reformatted it to Mac? There are companies that specialize in recovering data. But it could run in the thousands of dollars. First thing is DO NOT USE IT ANYMORE UNTIL YOU TRY TO RECOVER THE FILES.

I installed the operating system for my Mac. When I first connected it to my Mac no partitions were apparent. Is it because the one I was viewing is the primary and only partition, or is it possible that Mac didn't recognize and touch the windows formatted data and so when I created a partition it did so in free space? I'm really desperate.

Also are there any freeware that you recommend?

You are correct. Mac does not "see" windows format and vice versa. When you formatted it for Mac you formatted over the ntfs partition. Here are some programs. Some are free. However, prepare for not getting your data back. If you have been copying over the reformatted drive the chances diminish pretty fast.

I have limited experience in this area. You might be in over your head. You should Google about this and read up. Ask more questions on more specific data recovery pages. GOOD LUCK

Yeah, it is possible for you to recover your previous files as long as they are not overwritten completely. As everyone mentions, a data recovery tool can help you check whether all your wanted original files are recoverable, like 4Card Recovery, Recuva, EaseUS Data Recovery and more.
No matter which one you need, always act carefully and scan your drive deeply.
Never try to format a drive without any data backup again in the future.
