A few months ago, my pc started to perform worse than it ever had, in bf4. I went from about 120 fps on high in bf4, to around 30-70 fps(at the most) on low.

Problems

The problem is, that the frames drops so intensely, at any given time, i might go from 120 fps, to just 35 frames by moving to a base on maps like operation mortar. The frames will then rise again, as i move away from these areas.

I have also experience a lot of screen tearing, like trees beeing torn appart. This is very apparent, even with v sync enabled.

Another very apparent problem is the extreme stuttering which is more or less constant, at whatever frame rate the game is running at. The game just does no feel smooth, even at 120 fps.

The game also encounters random freeze up`s for about 1/2 a second, which will destroy any change of winning a firefight.

None of these problems are apparent on the test range

Hardware

GPU- Gigabyte 3gb oc (i have not overclocked the gpu at any point)

CPU- fx 6300

motherboard- asus m5a99x evo r2.0

RAM- 8GB Corsair xms 3 1600 mhz (2 x 4 gb)

Hard disc - Toshiba 7200 rpm 1tb

CPU Cooler - xtreme freeze r2.0

Case-Fractal design define r4

solutions tried

so I started to do some troubleshooting, as i was rather pissed off by the fact, that a reletary new computer could bug down as fast as my current build did. I have been trying for a couple of months to restore the computer, and i have tried everything that i could think of.

i have, as mentioned, tried many different things in order to restore the bad performance, but it seems like none of it has worked. The list goes as following:

software:

re install bf 4

hard drive check ( no errors after a benchmark using a program which i do not remember)

virus check (full scans) with both avast and antimallwware

update motherboard (i updated the sata driver, which improved performance significantly for a short time, untill it decided to restore the bad performance)

Display driver clean followed by an install of old gpu drivers (13.2)

display driver clean followed by an install of new gpu drivers (14.4)

full defragmentation of harddrive (from 60 to 0 %)

Complete re install of windows 8.1 pro followed by yet another reinstall of windows 8.1 pro (problems with activation which i have sorted out)

disableing any power regulating/power saving Technologies such as cool`quiet in bios

overclocking to 3.4 ghz (with safe temps under 60 degrees C)

restoring defualt mobo settings

check hard disc with command prompt (no faults]

checked temps and load with speedfan and control panel (windows)

checked gpu/cpu load in bf4 (perfoverlay.drawgraph 1) this was interesting, as it showed major load spikes, as the frames dropped. The load would spike out of the graph for both gpu and cpu, and the fps would drop dramatically

optimize the config file, according to rvalxfactors video about performance.

optimize ingame settings to defualt high without mantle and vsync.

Hardware check.

tested the rig with each memory stick for itself (so i took one out and played, after then changing them around once again to run the game once again) there was no difference by changing the memory sticks around.

checked temperatures (all fine for psu, mobo, gpu, cpu and harddrive)

please help a fellow gamer in trouble

I literally have no idea of what to do, as i think that i have done everything. I have litterally no idea, as to how a software problem as this could persist after a windows re-install where everything was to be deleted.

I think that there could be 2 problems, which are both hardware related:

Faulty / dying harddrive

Faulty memorysticks.

i Really hope that you can help me, as i am getting more and more frustrated (thinking about selling my computer and buying an xbox one to have a working gaming platform). I have not been able to have a smooth gaming experience for months and i really miss it.

Hope this awesome community can help me to solve my problem.

sincerely,

Dennis

This seems very strange, especially since all the things you have done hasn't worked. These things I'm going to say might not work but it's worth a go. The first thing I would try is un-parking your CPU cores, you can find out more here (don't click any download buttons except the underlined text beside the red writing).
http://www.coderbag.com/Programming-C/Disable-CPU-Core-Parking-Utility

The second thing I would do is open task manager open at the performance tab so you can see your CPU usage. Look for any spikes in your CPU usage, also if the usage is high while idle with nothing open then there is something running in the background. This could be a sign that there is a process running in the background using your CPU while your gaming. Even if there is no spikes I would still disable some un-needed start up process, for example Skype, webcam software, ect.

If you have a spare hard drive try that because your loading spikes sound like it could be a hard drive problem. Another thing is if your hard drive is nearly full that could affect its performance, so try uninstalling some stuff.

I hope this helps and if it doesn't I hope you will get this sorted out.

thanks for the fast answer!

I have tried the disable cpu utility, with no change. Everything seems to be exactly the same. I actually had tried this program on an previos windows install, without having it changing anything :) just forgot to mention it as it was no directly related to this specific set of problems.

i have only used about 200 gb of the disc, as i have not installed all of my games since the last windows re install :). So i gues that is out of the question :)

i will try to find another harddrive, to see if that will change anything.

thansk a lot :)

After a little testign, i have found a good place to show the performance drop as i look at demanding places:

looking away from the action:

Looking at the action:

10250067_10203160788892460_7732072507185271849_n.jpg

so the load incrases significantly as i look at the action

I have the same video card as you. Mine has performed fine, but it may be that you have a defective card? Someone posted they had a 780ti SLI and could barely hit 60 fps. So I connected to his twitch.tv, did some hardware checks etc. and it turned out one of the cards were bad. One card worked good, while the other was stuttering and unstable.

Notice the graph where the cpu and gpu are separated? They should stay together if you don't have the FPS locked. Also, they are pretty erratic. Download and install the latest MSI Afterburner beta 19 and enable OSD for cpu/gpu usage while playing in DX11. It makes it easy to monitor what's going on.
http://www.guru3d.com/files_details/msi_afterburner_beta_download.html

Your gpu usage should be at ~98% with video settings on Ultra and no FPS cap.

Something else to do is set gametime.maxvariablefps 60 I have mine set at 74.99 and it looks like this while playing:

I have tried afterburner, with a rather suprising result. The gpu usage never got over 60%, even at ultra details. As you mention, it might not be a harddrive og memory related isue, but rather a dying gpu.

This is rather wierd as have only had it for 4 months, and i have done zero overclocking to it.

nevertheless, here are the results:

10301189_10203161425588377_3661644872021444311_n.jpg

and with the frame locker thing that you mentioned:

10155430_10203161434548601_5577498212001215189_n.jpg

this had me wondering, if the cpu was bootlenecked or limited, as it does not change value?! it seems wierd

http://battlelog.battlefield.com/bf4/forum/threadview/2955065225354370496/2/

I have a similar issue, and i believe i know thats its the cpu or the mobo underperforming, not the 280x

After playing many different types of games, i've concluded that the cpu is underperforming (based on whether a game is gpu or cpu driven) Battlefield is quite a cpu intensive game (the way hit reg works, 64 players and all the stuff going on). I have an r9 280x, which should be able to play near ultra settings. And it could do that, until a month back (this pc is 4 months old) But no i play on medium, otherwise i don't get 60fps!!!

I also have a 750w PSU and 2x4 gb 1600mhz RAM

the temps max @ 65-70 on the gpu and 50-60 on the cpu

But what is really interesting is that we both have the 970 chipset, just like the op in the above thread

I've had to replace the mobo already (first had faulty fan socket) I can't remember but i think that i could still play ultra with the second mobo.

I have had quite a few random BSODs (some caused by an external hard drive i had plugged in).

And i do remember that when i first built logged onto the pc i went to gigabyte's drivers page and there were a load there for my mobo. I didn't know which ones i should have used, so its possible that i'm using the wrong drivers.

[Specs:
Win 8.1 (supposedly better performance with bf4!!)
Gigabyte GA 970a-d3p
fx-6300
R9 280x
2x4 8gb 1600mhz
xfx 750w smartpower
samsung 840 evo (holds Win 8.1 and not much else
Seagate 1tb 7200rpm

BF4 is a very CPU-intensive game during multiplayer, particularly when you have 64 players. Although the FX-6300 is billed as a six-core processor, it only has three FPUs, meaning that only three of the six cores can be utilised at the same time.

My suggestion is that the CPU is the bottleneck, in which case, there's not much you can do besides upgrading.

I would agree that it is a bottleneck. However for the first 3 months that i've had this PC, i've been playing near ultra settings.

But gradually that has decreased so that i now have to play on medium to get 60fps! with an r9280x that is despicable...

(i've got the latest WHQL drivers)

What brand of 280x, and what are the exact specs because i could never get 70 on max.

i could barely reach 60 with near max settings on bf4 with any amount of players.
