Asus M3A78-t suddenly causing problems

Hi there,

I'm new here, so I hope I do this according to the rules. :)

I have a PC, which has been working nicely for a couple of years. Normally when booting, all fans come one a beep can be heard and then all fans become more silent while still running.

I just tried turning it on and suddenly it wouldn't boot properly (I didn't see anything on the screen), I didn't hear the beep I was used hearing and the fans just kept running at high speed. After a while I heard one long beep and three short beeps. I tried removing the video card and using the onboard DVI port as according to the manual the beeping sequence indicated a video error.

When booting again I had the same issue. Because memory is often an issues I tried removing 2 of the four memory banks. Same beeping sequence remained. I removed the other two memory banks and placed on of the first two in the first position. Again, same beeping sequence.

Now becoming more desperate I removed the power for my four hard disks and three DVD drives. Again, the same beep sequence. I unplugged the power, removed the CMOS battery and put it back in. I turned the PC on and something changed! I now heard a short beep, but the fans still keep turning at high speed. After a few seconds I hear one long beep, but still nothing on the screen, with the onboard DVI or the video card.

At this point I really don't know what could be wrong. I have searched on Google for an answer, which led me to some other people with problems with this motherboard. All those problems were related to new boards, but mine has been working just fine for a few years.

Does anybody have another suggestion? Does anybody know what this beep sequence (one short beep, a few second pause, one long beep) means as I cannot find it in the manual. I suspect some component has died, but I haven't got a clue which one.

Yesterday I have used the PC and it was running just fine. Today (without changing anything) it's not. Please help me.

Thanks in advance!

Try putting everything in it's original configuration (as it was for the last 2 years). Now, remove one drive at a time and start up. If one of the drives removed yields a normal startup you may have a bad hard drive. Also have you done anything new or different lately just prior to this issue? If so, what was that? Please give us much detail as you can recall. I'm not conclusive yet that this may be a bad drive but I want to start here with you and narrow it down or rule it out. Obviously do the os drive last.

Hi jnewegger23, thanks for your answer. Even with only the required components attached I got weird beeps, which didn't correspond to any of the beep codes I found in the manual. I concluded either the motherboard or the CPU just died and bought a new motherboard, CPU and RAM. I'm now using Ubuntu from a USB drive to check the disks and I can access them without a problem. I'm fairly confident I have made the correct decision to buy new components (and I must admit, it's always nice upgrading).

Thanks for your help!
