I have been using this drive for about 9 months but have only just benchmarked it with HD Tune Pro, and it's supposed to be getting 540mb/s read speeds.

This is the HD Tune Pro benchmark's results (read speed)

HD Tune Pro: Samsung SSD 840 Series Benchmark

Test capacity: full

Read transfer rate
Transfer Rate Minimum : 270.9 MB/s
Transfer Rate Maximum : 313.9 MB/s
Transfer Rate Average : 300.0 MB/s
Access Time : 0.088 ms
Burst Rate : 194.1 MB/s
CPU Usage : 3.6%

I've checked that it is plugged into a SATA 6Gb/s port, and it definitely is. Samsung Magician even reads: "Your SSD is connected to a SATA 6GB/s (SATA 3) port and should show maximum performance."

Can anybody suggest a reason why my speeds are only 60% of what they should be?

Thanks for your time!

Solution
the brown plugs are eSata plugs using a non-intel chipset... which most certainly are slower then the intel SATA3 for the samsung 840evo... so, yeah, that will be a problem... make sure it's plugged into SATA3 plug 1 or 2 (those are the plugs opposite the eSATA plugs)... often the best speeds come from there.

FINALLY... it doesn't look like turbo mode is on. Those rates look like a 840 evo without the turbo. try turning it on
can you give me more information about your system. Samsung SSDs aren't compatible with certain AMD south-bridge designs, and get handicapped when they're plugged into one. Just want to see if that's the case. Worst case scenario you'll have to get an intel pci card with some SATA 3 ports on it.

Ok, this is slightly embarrassing: despite what Samsung Magic said, I turned off my system, removed my GPUs and checked the connectors. Turns out I'd plugged in both my SSD and HDD into the 'Brown' SATA connectors on the Asus Z87-Pro MB, while the yellow connectors are apparently faster (although, apparently, both SATA 3)

I just ran another benchmark and here are the results:

Although the speed is vastly improved, I'm still not getting anywhere near the 540mb/s that Samsung quote.

My system specs are:

Intel i7-4770k
Asus Z87-Pro
2 X ASUS DCUII GTX 780 in SLI

Thanks

EDIT: In case it isn't clear in the image, here's the information:

Thanks for your reply! How exactly do I turn Turbo on?

Also, I've just noticed this, should I be worried about it? o_O

Ahh, if you mean Rapid Mode, my SSD doesn't support it. It's only an 840, not an 840 Pro or Evo. Do you have any other ideas which might help bring the speeds up to spec?
